A genuine Spanish Colonial gold cob coin ("macuquina") struck at the Santa Fe de Bogotá mint during the reign of Charles II, dating to the final decade of the 17th century. The reverse displays the characteristic quartered castle-and-lion shield of the Spanish Crown, with the cross of Jerusalem visible — hallmarks of the period's colonial coinage. As is typical of cob coinage, the irregular flan shape and hand-struck details are not imperfections but defining characteristics of how these coins were produced: cut from gold bars, weighed, and struck by hand.

Spanish Colonial cob coins, known as "pieces of eight" and their gold equivalents, were the world's first truly global currency, minted across Spanish colonial South America from the 16th through 18th centuries. Struck at the Santa Fe de Bogotá mint, Colombian cobs are among the more scarce of the colonial series. Coins from the reign of Charles II — the last of the Spanish Habsburgs — represent the final chapter of a dynasty and are increasingly sought after by collectors of colonial and shipwreck-era coinage.
